CONSERVATION

At Fileturn we take pride in the lasting quality of our craftsmanship. One of the great privileges of our work is being able to play a role in restoring and preserving buildings that have been part of our heritage for hundreds of years, so that they remain part of our future.

Our expert craftsmen are accredited by English Heritage and have proved their skills, experience and empathy for historic buildings in conservation projects on some of the UK’s most prestigious properties. Whether minor refurbishments or major structural work, we approach every project with the same love of quality and meticulous attention to detail.

The Royal Albert Hall – Disabled Adaptations
Fileturn was commissioned to implement disabled access adaptations, helping to improve access for people with disabilities. We used purpose made replacement materials, taking the utmost care to provide an exact match for the original fabric of the building. The work was carried out to Fileturn’s usual fast track schedule to ensure that it was complete in time for the proms concert series.

The National Trust - Small Works Projects
Fileturn has a strong relationship with the National Trust in the Thames and Solent region, where we have supported the maintenance of a number of historic properties. Our work provides modern standards of comfort and efficiency while keeping the authentic period feel. Morden Hall Park: the 18th Century estate buildings are rented out by the National Trust. Fileturn has refurbished and upgraded several properties before rental, including the installation of roof insulation and secondary glazing, replastering and fitting new carpets and fittings throughout. Ham House: Fileturn refurbished the Orangery, replastering the walls with lime plaster, carrying out decorative work and revamping office space and toilets. Rainham Hall: the National Trust appointed Fileturn to carry out minor refurbishment work on this Georgian house including replacing damaged windows and renewing the lead on the roof. Blewcoat School: Fileturn refurbished the staff kitchen and improved access to the building, which was built in 1709 by a local brewer to provide an education for poor children and now houses the National Trust gift shop. St George’s Meadow: the National Trust commissioned Fileturn to rebuild the gable wall of a barn at the nature site using traditional materials.

The Lygon Arms – Major Refurbishment
Fileturn carried out a full programme of works to refurbish and expand the Grade I listed 16th Century Lygon Arms Hotel. We worked closely with English Heritage & The Conservation Department to ensure that the hotel’s original features were preserved or replaced inhistorically accurate detail, while providing the best of modern luxury throughout.

The project included major structural work to secure and restore an original ornate ceiling, and painstaking research to match original features including oak panelling, beams, cornicing, crittall windows and stone flags. For full details click here.
